Dr.Zhendan Shi

Title: Safeguard geese health and reproductive performances by maintaining a clean and comfortable living environment

 

 

Biography:

Professor Zhendan Shi, “Dan”, graduated from Nanjing Agricultural University in 1985, with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science degree majoring in Animal Science.  He undertook his PhD studies at Lincoln University, New Zealand, from 1987 to 1992, on thyroid regulation of seasonal reproductive activities in European red deer.  After returning back to China, he took up a teaching and research post on Animal Reproduction at South China Agricultural University in Guangzhou.  From 2011 till now, he is stationed at Institute of Animal Science, Jiangsu Academy of Agricultural Sciences in Nanjing Jiangsu Province. While working at SCAU, he developed several techniques on regulating animal and poultry reproductive activities, both for research purposes and for practical applications in the industry.  Some of his work include photoperiodic manipulation of breeding seasonality of both short and long day breeding geese, and enhancement of ovarian follicle develoment via immunization against a recombinant inhibin protein, so to improve superovulation and conception rates in mammalian farm animals.  The technique of inducing out-of-season breeding during summer months by manipulation of photoperiod has been widely extended to the Chinese goose industry, and has greatly helped to increase farmers’ economic strength, and helped the modern development of Chinese goose industry.  From 2008, Prof. Shi has been holding a Research and Develpoment Post in the China Agriculture Research System, to study the environmental impacts on water fowl health and production performances.  This work deals with suppressing pathgenic bacteria and LPS pollution in the “fowl-fish” integrative production system, and with improving in house air quality and hygiene in closed barn production system.  He is actively involved in academic conferences, technical workshops, discussion forums all over the country.  Over the years, Dan has published over 160 academic and extension papers out of his work.  In this invited presenation, he will share with you the results of some of his work.
