Dr.Hongwei Xin
Iowa State University
Title: Environment Enhancement toward Sustainable Poultry Production




Dr. Xin is a Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in the Departments of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE) and Animal Science at Iowa State University, Iowa Egg Council endowed professor, and director of the Egg Industry Center located at Iowa State University. His research and extension programs focus on a) air quality issues relative to animal production; b) animal-environment interactions with regards to animal bioenergetics, behavior and welfare, production efficiency and sustainability; and c) livestock and poultry housing systems and environmental control.  As director of the Egg Industry Center, he oversees the operation of the Center whose mission is to add value to the egg industry by facilitating research and learning for egg producers, processors and consumers through national and international collaborations.

Xin’s scholarly accomplishments include author/co-author of 165 published refereed journal articles (over 600 technical publications and presentations total); PI/Co-PI of $23 million in contracts and grants; mentor of 62 graduate students, post-docs and visiting scholars; delivery of over 100 invited talks in 15 countries. He serves on numerous academic, industry and government scientific advisory boards or task forces at state, national and international levels. These accomplishments have had considerable impacts on animal production agriculture, professional practices, and next generation scientists.

Major awards and honors include Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Iowa State University, ISU Award for Outstanding Achievements in Research, ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) Outstanding Achievement in International Agriculture Award, CALS Outstanding Research Award, ISU College of Engineering (COE) David R. Boylan Eminent Faculty Research Award, ISU-COE Superior Extension Award; USPOULTRY 2014 Workhorse of the Year Award, Iowa Poultry Industry Hall of Fame Award; three-term member of USDA Agricultural Air Quality Taskforce appointed by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture; Fellow of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE), ASABE New Holland Young Researcher Award, and 12 ASABE Paper Awards.

Professor Xin received his B.S. degree from Shenyang Agricultural University (China), and M.S. and PhD degrees from University of Nebraska (USA). Before joining ISU in 1993, he spent 3.5 years as a Post-doc Research Associate at University of Arkansas conducting broiler housing research.
