Title: What is the risk of a new worldwide Salmonella pandemic in the 21st century?

Biography:

Prof. Dr. Filip Van Immerseel has a Master in bio-engineering Sciences (1999), a Master in Laboratory Animal Sciences (2004), and a PhD in Veterinary Medical Sciences (2004). He is currently head of a research group studying host-bacterium interactions in the intestinal tract, mainly in poultry, but also in other animal species, including humans, at the Laboratory of Veterinary Bacteriology of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Ghent University, Belgium. His group focusses on Salmonella and Clostridium perfringens as major pathogens, and on the role of the intestinal microbiota on host health, with emphasis on butyrate producing bacteria. Understanding the behavior of pathogens and understanding how shifts in the microbiota composition can affect bacterial virulence and intestinal (immune) responses are key topics, and these data are used to rationally develop control methods and products. He holds more than 150 papers in international peer-reviewed journals and multiple patents on vaccines and probiotics. He is lecturer at Ghent University and invited lecturer at other EU Universities and editor of the journal Avian Pathology, and a frequent speaker at international conferences.
