Title: The Current and Future of Epigenetics in Poultry Health

Biography
Dr. Jiuzhou Song got his animal science degree and master degree from the Northwest A&F University in 1986. Then he received his Ph.D. degree in statistical genetics from China Agricultural University in 1995. From 1996 till 1998, he held the Gold Meir Fellowships as a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Genetics at Hebrew University. From 1998 till 2000, he was a research fellow in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the Indiana University. Before moving to Maryland, USA, he was a biostatistician and bioinformatician in the Departments of Microbiology & Infectious Disease, and Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary. Now he is a professor in the Department of Animal and Avian Sciences at the University of Maryland. In the past decades, his entire career has been devoted on the animal genetics and breeding. His lab is mainly to use statistical genetics and computational biology methods to study interaction between genomes and environmental factors, especially to discover genetic and epigenetics makers that modify responses to environmental exposure and to investigate how such epigenetic biomarkers and alleles affect exposed individuals.  The research topics are covering many areas of high-throughput data analysis such as RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, methylation, regulatory networks, modeling and molecular pathway analyses. This important information is essential in determining disease-prevention and improving animal health. Besides significant contributions in epigenetic modifications of host-viral interaction in poultry and other animal species, his lab recently developed a series of statistical methods in computational epigenetic. So far, he has published more than 135 peer-reviewed research articles and 15 book chapters. He worked as grant panel members for USDA/NIFA, National Science Foundation of United States, National Science Foundation of China and Genome Canada. As an ad hoc reviewer, he served many times for BBSRC (UK), NRF/RISA (South Africa) and the Foundation of Polish Science. Being members of several prestigious academic societies, he is a reviewer for more than 22 journals.   He was elected in the ISAG Domestic Animal Epigenetics Standing Committee in 2014. Importantly, he was invited 5 times by the Plant and Animal Genome Conference to give talks on animal epigenetics, and was keynote speakers at the National Breeders Roundtable, the Symposium of Infectious Disease and Epigenetics in Middle East and other international conferences.
