Title: Poultry Immunogenetics: Protecting Health and Food Security, Expressing Genetic Potential

Dr. Susan J. Lamont has researched poultry immunology and genetics for more than four decades. She received her Ph.D. on studies of fundamental immunology in chickens from the University of Illinois Medical Center. She was a postdoctoral research associate with Dr. J. Robert Smyth, Jr. at the University of Massachusetts, where she conducted the first immunological studies on the Smyth line of chickens, a genetic model of vitiligo, an auto-immune disease.  She currently leads an active research program with an emphasis on determining the molecular genetic control of important biological traits, especially those related to disease. Current major research projects include a focus on the immunologic and genomic response of chickens to avian pathogenic E. coli, Newcastle disease virus and inflammatory and thermal stressors; and also avian biodiversity. Contemporary technologies of genomic sequencing, transcriptome analysis and genome-wide association studies are incorporated into these studies. Dr. Lamont oversees the maintenance of a large collection of unique genetic chicken lines at Iowa State University. These lines serve as a discovery platform for novel studies on immunogenetics. Dr. Lamont enjoys extensive global research collaborations and has a strong interest in conducting research of value to the full range of poultry production including the sophisticated poultry breeding industry, large-scale, efficient production operations and small, low-input poultry keeping. She has published over 200 peer-reviewed journal papers and invited book chapters.  Dr. Lamont has won numerous awards from Iowa State University and from scientific organizations, recognizing her contributions in research and service. Some of these special recognitions include the Helene Cecil Leadership Award, Embrex-Pfizer Fundamental Science Award and the Merck Award for Achievement from the Poultry Science Association;  the Outstanding Service Award from the Midwest Poultry Consortium; and the Faculty Excellence Award from the Iowa Board of Regents. She has been elected a Fellow of both the Poultry Science Association and of the International Society of Animal Genetics. Dr. Lamont is actively engaged in graduate education, teaching three graduate courses: Livestock Immunogenetics, Poultry Breeding and Genetics, and Responsible Conduct of Research. She mentors PhD students, postdocs and visiting scholars in her lab.  She also has extensive administrative experience, including serving as the chair of her department, chair of the interdepartmental Immunobiology program, an assistant director of research for her college, and she is currently the Equity Advisor for her college.  Dr. Lamont been a faculty member in the department of Animal Science at Iowa State University for over 30 years, and is currently a C.F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor.
