Dr.Craig N. Coon
University of Arkansas
Title: Broiler Breeder protein turnover, de novo lipogenesis, heat production and body composition changes



Dr. Craig Coon received his B.S. degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M University in 1966. After serving his country in Viet Nam in 1967-68, he returned to Texas A&M and received his M.S. in Plant Physiology and Biochemistry in 1970 and Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Biophysics in 1973. Dr. Coon was nominated in 1973 by the Biochemistry and Biophysics Department as the Outstanding Graduate Student from Texas A&M University. Dr. Coon has been a faculty member involved in research, teaching, and extension at the University of Maryland, Washington State University, University of Minnesota, and the University of Arkansas. Dr. Coon’s research interests are nutrient utilization, environmental interactions with nutrition, energy systems, feedstuff evaluation, and amino acid metabolism. Dr. Coon’s current research is focused on nutritional and age effects on protein turnover, myopathy, heat production, body composition change, and lipid metabolism for broilers and broiler breeders. Dr. Coon has been awarded approximately 7 million dollars in Extramural Research Grants from the Allied Feed Industry and from U.S. and International Livestock and Poultry companies during his 45 year career.
Dr. Coon has been responsible for teaching Principles of Nutrition for undergraduates and Biochemical Nutrition and Amino Acid and Protein Nutrition and Metabolism for graduate students. Dr Coon has been the main advisor of 35 students obtaining their advanced graduate degrees. Visiting Scientist from all over the world have spent their sabbaticals with Dr Coon working on different nutritional problems. Dr. Coon’s students currently hold significant academic and industry positions and his students are highly sought after for new positions in the industry. Dr. Coon has published over 260 refereed papers and 9 book chapters. Dr Coon’s main focus has been poultry nutrition but he has also published nutrition research in the field of rodent, dairy, swine, equine, and canine nutrition. Dr Coon was the recipient of two Sabbatical Quarter Leaves while at the University of Minnesota where he conducted nutrition research at the University of Reading in 1987 and at the Poultry Research Institute in Roslin Scotland in 1991. Dr. Coon is often invited to many international and national locations to speak on poultry nutrition. Dr Coon has given more than 350 invited presentations on nutrition in 48 different countries. Dr. Coon was the 1994 recipient of the American Feed Industry Association Nutrition Research Award and in 1996 was invited to give the 12th Clyde Eby Memorial lecture at North Carolina State University. Dr. Coon joined the faculty at the University of Arkansas in 1997 as the recipient of the Arkansas Poultry Federation Endowed Chair. Dr Coon was the recipient of the 2012 Novus International Scholastic Award presented for his teaching and research contributions around the world.
