Title: Natural antioxidants and stresses in poultry production: from vitamins to vitagenes

Dr. Peter Surai started his studies at Kharkov University, Ukraine and later went on to the Ukraine Poultry Research Institute where he got his PhD and DSc in biochemistry studing effects of antioxidants on turkey semen qulity and effect of vitamins on poultry. Later he became a head of Depatment of Physiology, Biochemistry and Nutrition at the Poultry Research Institute (Ukraine) being responsible for the poultry nutrition of the whole country and after several years of lecturing in human physiology he became a Professor of Human Physiology at Kharkov National Pedagogical University.

In 1994 he moved to Scotland to continue his antioxidant-related research related to poultry and in 2001 he was promoted to a full Professor of Nutritional Biochemistry at the Avian Svience Research Centre of the Scottish Agricultural College. Later he become a visiting professor there. He also has been awarded a Honorary Professorship in Nutrition at the Szent Instvan University, Godolo, Hungary; Honorary Professorship in Evolutionary Biology at Glasgow University, Scotland; Honorary Professorship in Poultry and Animal Sciences at Sumy National Agrarian University, Ukraine, visiting Professorship in Nutrition at Trakia University, Stara Zagora, Bulgaria and Honorary Professorship in Food technology at Odessa National Academy of Food Technologies, Ukraine. Recently he has been elected to be a foreign member of Russian Academy of Sciences. Recently he has also become the technical director of an innovative company Feed-Food.Ltd in the UK.

His main interest has been concerned with aspects of antioxidant metabolism including selenium, Vitamin E and carotenoids  in relation to poultry nutrition, reproduction and functional food production. Recetly he has been concentrating on molecular mechanisms of stresses and nutritional means of decreasing their negative effects on poultry. In particular he developed a vitagene concept of fighting stresses in poultry production. He has 740  research publications, including 135 papers in peer-reviewed Journals, including a paper in Science (in English), 160 papers in peer-reviewed Journals (in Russian), five American Patents, one Canadian and one European Patent, five Patents of the Ukraine and 19 Patents of the former USSR and 10 books. In 1999 he received a presitgios the John Logie Baird Award for Innovation for the development of “super-eggs” and in 2000 The World’s Poultry Science Association Award for reasearch in recognition of an outstanding contribution to the development of the poultry industry. For the last 10 years he has been lecturing all over the world visiting  more than 70 countries.

His books “Natural Antioxidants in Avian Nutrition and Reproduction” and  “Selenium in Nutrition and Health are published by the Nottingham University Press in 2002 and 2006 respectively. His new book "Eggs in your life"  has been recently  published by Feed-Food.Ltd in the UK.
